Fanless computer / 0dBA Project rev. 2

 
    This operation marked the finish of turning a computer out of a set of component parts into a functional device. In the result I got a completely silent game-playing system. I can congratulate myself :). Several general views:
 

  
 
    It should be mentioned that the main drawback of the previous project – slow loading of game levels – has moved on to the new project together with laptop hard disks. In a time I was driven crazy with it and I started thinking how to correct this drawback. In the result specially for games I set up SCSI 10000 rpm, and I made it possible to disable it on-the-fly in order it wouldn’t hinder me from routine work. The silent hdd box, being not very effective but simple in construction, lowered the hard disk noise to a bearable degree, which is successfully suppressed with shots sound in the speakers.

    By the moment of writing this article, the computer in such configuration had worked near a year. For that time one of the laptop hard disks failed. This wasn’t a surprise for me. It displayed yellow icons in S.M.A.R.T. from the very beginning. I substituted it with a “ball” WD which was originally quiet noisy. It was packed into the new silent box... This construction solves the problem of noise insulation of full-size disks. However I’m going to mount a laptop hard disk again in my computer, because vibration insulation of the box leaves much to be desired. And there is not enough space for making a soft hanger – this armoured box itself hardly got into the case.
