Fanless computer / 0dBA Project rev. 2

You can see here how we made the hook for Ninja – we needed only two brackets out of fasteners set for S775 and four brace rods for wires. But northbridge gave us some trouble. Initially we wanted to mount there radiator of Coolermaster Blue Ice II with fins damaged for improvement of convective ventilation. However the first testing of the system showed that this was not good idea: being clamped in a narrow slot between hot video adapter and scorching radiator of Ninja, the small Blue Ice was suffocated and couldn’t provide proper cooling of the bridge. Against my will, I had to make cooling by the old scheme, with outside radiator. And here… Don’t work with pipes on the open crystal until you make at first appropriate supporting frame (shim). Especially if you work on such minute crystal as northbridge GF 6100. I was too lazy to make a frame, and I decided to manage with stripes of white foam rubber pasted along the perimeter of the shim; such rubber stripes are usually included in the set of chipset coolers. During final adjustment of pipes (this is done on the mounted thermal block) we heard a quiet crunch and… You know now where from the “cadaver” mentioned in this article appeared :). Having bought another mother board I approached to the problem of making a frame more seriously, and soon the construction which you can see in the photograph stood in beauty on the bridge. In the view of convenience of mounting/dismantling of the computer I lost nothing: the conjunction of outside thermal block and radiator proved to be quick-dismountable, with one screw only:

Fanless Motherboard

I used component parts of VGA-cooler of Thermaltake Schooner for this mod. I had bought two such coolers and used in my mod all components except radiators. To unbend the pipes, I had to anneal them. But this was worthy of doing: supplied with powder wick their characteristics are better than those of Zalman type pipes of 2HC2.

Non-constructive thoughts about modding...

All began when one day my neighbour, he is Automatic Control Engineer, came and started to beg me to give him one diode. When I asked him why, he typed modding in a search engine. And it had a great effect on me. I was sick about it. Maybe there is nothing accidental in the world and this modding seed fell into good soil. All my life I was interested in design.
