Heatsink lapping guide

To my great regret there are few manufacturers that pay much attention to high-grade processing of heat removing surface of cooler, the surface that is in contact with processor. Even with unaided eye we can see cutter, chisel or grinding wheel signs. These surface defects can affect on the processor heating rate. If you can remedy this temperature values of cooling radiator would show a great improvement. So, overclock potential will grow otherwise you can install less productive, silent fan. You can see machining markings on a picture, I have already told about it.
All these micro scratches don’t prevent the surface from gloss and you also couldn’t  touch them.

Then how can you clear up this mistake? Processing with glass paper won’t do, how hard we tried, but we can’t achieve smooth surface. Don’t even try, you’ll make edges oval and correction of this oval would take much more time… The first method is rubbing, from the word rub, fit in. high-grade reprocessing of heat removing surface of cooler can gain up to 8 C     (46,40 F) degrees! But it’s not easy.  We’ll need green polish paste, vegetable oil and polished metal plate or a piece of thin glass.

polish paste

First stage is preparing the grinding mixture. Mince some polish paste with the sharp knife and drip in these cuts some vegetable oil.

Put a cooler's base is this substance and start rubbing. Do it softly, without pushing it, in circular motion. If it is needed pour some more oil or add some more paste cuts. Periodically, when the mixture is filled with output material, change it and remake it. You need to change it every 5-7 minutes. There is no need to wash it, just clean with a duster. All my coolers are already grinded, so I used simple copper bar in this photo session.

Non-constructive thoughts about modding...

All began when one day my neighbour, he is Automatic Control Engineer, came and started to beg me to give him one diode. When I asked him why, he typed modding in a search engine. And it had a great effect on me. I was sick about it. Maybe there is nothing accidental in the world and this modding seed fell into good soil. All my life I was interested in design.
