Mod "LowSphere"

The idea of making polyhedral case is rather simple. All this started with a simple idea to form the spherical case, unusual, at a minimum of expenses in terms of technical and material issues. Having understood that to get acryl hemispheres of necessary diameter is a problematic task, steel spheres have already been in galleries, and in processing of the wood I still do not possess necessary skills, I decided to simplify the task - to make angular polyhedral (namely “low polygonal”) sphere. Taking advantage of reliable 3DMax the necessary sketch has finally been got and all necessary calculations have been made, with manual converting in CorelDraw.

The idea is rather simple: Sphere is divided into two halves; between them there is the main supporting plate (at the same time it tightens the edges of the bottom hemisphere). Motherboard is fixed on the middle supporting plate; power unit and hard disks are under it. Frontal cooler blows angularly to the plate, so divided airflow blows in the bottom part of motherboard and leaves via the top to video card.
After getting all plates and decorative elements from laser cutting there left only to buy necessary tool (to get “riveter”) and materials:
•  88 cheap hinges
•  about 400 rivets
•  4 cap locks
•  8 hinges for glass cases
I have already got power unit and fans. I’ve made all works on my own computer, on the base of мАТХ motherboard, two hard disks, video and audio cards. Cooling is completely air-to-air, however my processor does not belong to the series of extremely hot ones.

*The final result differs from the idea a little bit. I had to refuse making external decor made of aluminium plates due to complexity and cost of the works. I’ve chosen black color PVC cutting. The color has been chosen quite reasonably: black hard disks, black screen of radiator of video card, black power unit, black hinges... Any other color would be obviously inappropriate.

Non-constructive thoughts about modding...

All began when one day my neighbour, he is Automatic Control Engineer, came and started to beg me to give him one diode. When I asked him why, he typed modding in a search engine. And it had a great effect on me. I was sick about it. Maybe there is nothing accidental in the world and this modding seed fell into good soil. All my life I was interested in design.
