Remodel standard power supply unit into a fanless one.

By the way, take into consideration that when being bound at the factory metal on the pipes stretched, and as a result it made knolls and crimps after unbinding. That’s why the inner diameter of pipe-binding device is 6 mm, not nominal 5 mm diameter of a heat pipe. Put all these things aside and proceed again to the power supply unit. Without the removed fan it reminds a kind of oven: despite all additional radiators, which we’ll mount, a considerable amount of heat will disperse inside as before, with all the consequences. Something must be done with it; namely, we must provide good ventilation. Thus, take a dremel tool and cut the back grating out. Do this in such way:

Later, one more way of the hot air outlet will be added. Now it’s the high time to fasten radiators-extensions. Having tried a number of variants we’ve found the following optimal sequence of operations:
    1. Set the extensions against the radiators of power unit and mark the holes; it’s sensible to do this operation when the card is still in the casing.
    2. Take the card out with all the components placed on it and, having left the casing to dangle on the wires, paste everything except radiators with paint scotch tape (the less cuttings get to the card the better):

    3. Punch and drill the marked holes in radiators-extensions (not follow my example shown in the photo :)). The drill diameter is 2.5 mm (for M3 thread) or 3.2 mm (for M4 thread), depending on the screws which you are going to use for fastening the radiators.
    4. Take double-sided scotch (I hope you have it) and paste the extensions to power unit radiators. You may glue them with superglue if you are sure that you’ll manage to tear it off later.
    5. Use the holes in the extensions as a guide and drill power unit radiators for the length of an average three\four millimeter screw (drill through the fins as you may guess). Take the sharpest drill and perform drilling little by little, without pressure. Radiator is held by transistors only and two weak legs, that’s why it moves considerably under pressure disordering the drill at that.
    6. Tear he extensions off, take the tap and make threading in power unit radiators
    7. Ream the holes in the extensions for the screws (3 or 4 mm drill).
That’s all for the time present. Ghetto-variant consists in setting the extensions on “Radial”; in this case you may use radiators with thicker finning.

Non-constructive thoughts about modding...

All began when one day my neighbour, he is Automatic Control Engineer, came and started to beg me to give him one diode. When I asked him why, he typed modding in a search engine. And it had a great effect on me. I was sick about it. Maybe there is nothing accidental in the world and this modding seed fell into good soil. All my life I was interested in design.
