Making a luminous Linux logotype.

Having obtained a logotype of high quality, varnish it using a can. This measure helps to clear away mat coating that emerges after heating and to protect the picture. Don’t varnish by means of a brush. You’ll smear everything :) Laser toner can be easily washed off by acetone. You can also change toner into a good dye having dissolved a certain amount of it in acetone.
Thus, we’ve obtained a persistent image of high quality on acrylic plastic by two different means and cut the logo out by its outline. What should we do next? You can use the logo to your own discretion. For example, you can make a funny trinket, a stylish clock-face, an emblem for your computer or something else…
This is what I’ve made. I planned initially to make a luminous logo… let’s start. We must make a small headlight giving ambient white light of a proper brightness for illumination. Its light should be pointed strictly to a proper direction not to make an unneeded backlight around. White high-brightness diodes will be right for that purpose. Four diodes will be enough taking into consideration the size of the penguin of 4*5 cm. Mount the light diodes into a specially designed “headlight” case. Solder the case of a thin-tin can… Nescafe tins fit for that purpose well.

Make a small board for the light diodes.

Solder the board into the headlight case. Install light diffuser made of special acrylic plastic (for example, the one used in fluorescent lamps in entrances).

Lead the wiring out through a protective pipe. Illumination is finished.

One more thing to do is to glue the logotype that has already been cut out. Mark and cut place for it carefully.

In my case this was a hard work… the thickness of aluminium was 3.5 mm… I agonized over it an hour and a half and finally got the necessary opening.

Degrease all component parts and cover it with epoxy.

remove air bubbles

Covering it with epoxy pay attention to the air bubbles; one bubble can spoil irretrievably all the work… I remove them easily with a needle and cigarette lighter.

Non-constructive thoughts about modding...

All began when one day my neighbour, he is Automatic Control Engineer, came and started to beg me to give him one diode. When I asked him why, he typed modding in a search engine. And it had a great effect on me. I was sick about it. Maybe there is nothing accidental in the world and this modding seed fell into good soil. All my life I was interested in design.
