Homemade silent power supply

This article is meant for PC users who don’t like the noise of computer fans, and who are skilled persons and like doing things with their own hands. Saved money will be a nice bonus.
The idea is not new. Those, who keep up with the theme, know some methods. I have seen a beautiful variant on heat pipes; there is a well-known and universal method of transistors offset. My method is easier but it is not convenient for all power boxes. This method is good for making a power supply with 120 mm fan passive. InWin-Powerman 430 is almost ideal; it has been running a year at my home, having endured hot summer. During its running I have already changed two computers. I have no complaints, what proves perfect quality of modding. The required suppliers include two aluminium plates of 7-8 mm thickness; a radiator of appropriate size and surface area of more than 500 square centimeters; insulating and heat-conducting spacer (you may buy it in Cheap Deep) or at least a thin mica; hot adhesive and thermal paste. Having removed the cover you can see the insides.

Disassemble the device further, take away the board, and nip off the fan. Unsolder radiators together with transistors and big transformer by means of tin suction device or copper braiding. Remember position of the parts, unfasten transistors and vari-tucks; put aside the components for a while.

Power supply before modding

Grind in end surfaces of T-transistor radiators. Then we’ll screw thick aluminium plates to them, and a big radiator to these plates through an insulating spacer. It looks like a complicated structure but this is the only means to gain good heat transfer and safe galvanic separation. In practice it’s simplier then it may seem.

My modding design
Non-constructive thoughts about modding...

All began when one day my neighbour, he is Automatic Control Engineer, came and started to beg me to give him one diode. When I asked him why, he typed modding in a search engine. And it had a great effect on me. I was sick about it. Maybe there is nothing accidental in the world and this modding seed fell into good soil. All my life I was interested in design.
