Silent computer

Our answer to Zalman: 0dBA project, rev.1

I. Stages of a great project.
I’ll with history. I was thinking over the idea of making fanless computer for two years. It all began one day when I was surfing the internet and I found website of one Japanese modder, Numano3 (this website do not exist now). And what I saw there was great: he made two computers without coolers, and not on very cold configurations. And it was long ago, when Zalman 7000 was manufactured and the only cooler on heat pipes was Coolermaster HHC-1, one with classical construction (surely was no TNN500 type cases and passive power supplies). So I had a dream. But the more I thought about this project the more I understood that I couldn’t make it. There were little problems, but the most serious problem was that there was no possibility to find suitable radiator. And I didn’t want to make an awful construction from alloy sheets using one of Numano’s projects. No, I'm not such a maniac. And I shook it out from my head. But I was interested in other projects. But I was always keen on making something, using heat pipes and big radiators. And at last I had a chance. The first step was making video card cooling system for MTX 1.0 project: I didn’t plan it as passive, but there were few heat pipes – the main radiator should be on the back side of a card. It was a copy of Zalman's ZM80C-HP and pipes donor was cheap modification of the same cooler - ZM50. After the week of hard work I made this device:

The design was good, all worked as it planned to work. But it was not the end. I couldn’t pay 20$ for each pipe (it’s the price of ZM50-HP) and there were no other sources. And I again started waiting for miracle to happen.
And then there were two important events: I found very interesting set – HDD-cooler ZM-2HC1 with ten easily removable heat pipes and after that Numano made his third project and he used such pipes! I bought 2HC1 for my tests and suddenly very embarrassing mistake happened and it stopped the work process for the half of the year. There was no possibility to test pipes in similar to Numano’s construction (there were no radiators) and I decided to extend Volcano 7 radiator with these pipes:

Non-constructive thoughts about modding...

All began when one day my neighbour, he is Automatic Control Engineer, came and started to beg me to give him one diode. When I asked him why, he typed modding in a search engine. And it had a great effect on me. I was sick about it. Maybe there is nothing accidental in the world and this modding seed fell into good soil. All my life I was interested in design.
