Different ways to obtain heatpipes

I would like to answer this question in the following way: in the nearest shop… But I can’t. Chinese manufacturers don’t supply heat pipes; that’s not profitable for them and the demand is not great. So, we, DIYers, have to exercise ruse and wit in search of invaluable vessels: particularly, use off-the-shelf products as donors. At the moment I know three noteworthy products that can be used to source heatpipes from.

What is the structure and purpose of heat pipes?
This technology is not new. The first patent was issued to some Gogler in 1944. The heat pipes have a wide range of operating temperatures, the speed of heat transfer outdoes the sound speed and they have durability of 20 000 working hours. That makes it a high-efficient and reliable system. The heat tranfer rate of the simplest heatpipe is a hundred times higher than that of a copper rod of the same diameter. Inside there is working fluid and a wick which is made of twisted wire or sintered copper powder. Air is pumped out of heatpipes to make water vaporize at lower temperatures.
According to manufacturer information, modern heat pipes used for computer cooling are filled up with the following solution: "some water (90%) some mixes, such as nitrogen (0,3 %), ammonia (7 %) and aldehyde HC 7 (2,7 %)".

broken heat pipes

The first candidate, the best known one, is the ZM-2HC2 hard disk cooler by Zalman. It has eleven pipes and is rather affordable. But it is the most inconvenient for our purpose, for its heatpipes are too short, made of hard copper and are easily broken. However the first home-made fanless computers owe this device their existance.

The second candidate is less known. It is the ZM80D-HP VGA cooler by the same manufacturer. There are two convenient heat pipes of perfect quality in the set. The material is soft and pliable and the heatpipes' length is almost forty centimeters. The only distressing factor is the price. The cost of the two thin pipes is 29 $… We’ll need eight such pipes for a high-end processor.

Non-constructive thoughts about modding...

All began when one day my neighbour, he is Automatic Control Engineer, came and started to beg me to give him one diode. When I asked him why, he typed modding in a search engine. And it had a great effect on me. I was sick about it. Maybe there is nothing accidental in the world and this modding seed fell into good soil. All my life I was interested in design.
