Silencing a hard drive

   The outward appearance of the silent hard disk case is not remarkable for refinement. The cooling radiator is the basis of the construction; the Winchesters and noise insulation are fixed to it. The radiator itself performs the function of the back panel. It is fixed to the computer chassis through rubber vibration dampers. That is simple, safe and effective.

   It can be seen in the picture that the space between computer case and hard disk cooler is only 1 mm. We used rubber-metal dampers from the kit of ZM-2HC2.


They prevent safely from vibration transfer from hard disks to computer case. I saw them on sale severally and in any case you can easily find appropriate substitute, for example, in a truck-bed kiosk.

   The acoustic cabinet is made of 1.5 mm aluminium plate and is assembled with the help of self-tapping screws. Inside it is covered with foamed polyvinylchloride under which there is a thick layer of silicone. Silicone sealant is used not only as glue; it considerably helps to control vibration and fills the slots. You can use sheet-like gerlen instead of sealant. You can buy it in a construction market. Foamed polyvinylchloride must go beyond the side edges 2-3 mm; that will provide the tightness of the modded construction when the cabinet will be fastened to its place. These two millimeters make a kind of junction sealant.
